The INSIGHT M700 is a multi -purpose portable system designed for temporary line installation on network sections suffering repeated, hard to find faults. In addition, the M700 is a unique training tool for network teams to gain a deeper knowledge of the distributed characteriztics of earth faults in networks of all types of neutral treatments.

• Very high earth fault sensitivity (> 10 kΩ) exploiting multiple algorithms

• Reliable localization of faults regardless of neutral treatment

• Notifications Direct to operator’s smartphone

• Fault localisation via Google maps

• Intuitive graphical user interface (GUI)

• Distance to fault values displayed

• Provides a distributed reference in evaluating relay performance under fault conditions

High sensitivity earth fault detection locates transient and incipient faults and disturbances

• Simple two node plug and play installation with  no set up or Network Model required

• A simple to use GUI displays current, substation V0 and all disturbance and fault activity

• Real time access to the GUI via a smartphone

• Excellent visibility of the operational conditions on the network

• Fault and disturbance activity stored in the User database

• Reliable, accurate and effective for capturing transient fault activity and Network Training

The Distribution Network historically has had issues due to a fundamental lack of visibility, and this lack of visibility is compounded when the earth faults are incipient rather than permanent in nature. Every utility has to deal with this type of fault occurrence, but the INSIGHT M700 System is of significant benefit as it captures network disturbances when there is no trip, or the fault causes a short duration outage. In general, existing line monitoring solutions fail to identify very high resistance earth faults. The combination of a network fault that may be only visible to the relay at the head of the feeder, and a lack of permanence in the fault is both diffi  cult and frustrati ng to resolve. This problem is solved by INSIGHT M700 System, when all distributed fault disturbances are captured, and the site of the problem is identified, located and automatically notified.

  • M700 System Architecture

At the front end of the system are the L01 Line Sensors and a local L700 Data Concentrator. Each Line Sensor communicates wirelessly with its local data concentrator, and the L700 communicates with the Server. A substation installed device provides neutral displacement voltage which captures time stamped V0 in a compensated Network. This device is called the S700 which is also an excellent high impedance earth fault (HZEF) relay.

  • M700 Operation and Integration

The M700 System has multiple options for fault or disturbance capture. For example, when a distributed Sensor or a Substation S700 captures an overcurrent/ undercurrent condition or an increase in V0 at the substation, it notifies the server of the precise time of event. The server in turn polls for data at the time of the event from the two nodes deployed receiving a precise, distributed data picture of the disturbance both upstream and downstream of the fault.

Once processed by the server, the fault or disturbance is displayed in the GUI. This means that in a matt er of seconds, the operator will know where a disturbance has occurred, its cause and effect. It will tell if the fault has occurred between, upstream or downstream of the deployed nodes with a distance to fault value.
